- Casa Boher Extra Brut, NV, Rosell Boher, Mendoza, Argentina -
Decades of tradition and expertise lie at the heart of Cavas Rosell Boher wines. Produced in the Traditional Method, a second fermentation in bottle is followed by a minimum of 18 months' lees ageing. This Extra Brut is pale salmon-pink in colour with persistent, fine bubbles leading to a lingering foam. A lively, fresh and complex nose of Pinot-influenced wild raspberries, citrus fruits, peach, apple and cocount, combine with aromas of shortbread. The Palate is full-bodied with a refreshing acidity, remarkable energy and a long finish, exhibiting flavours of tropical (grapefruit and pineapple) fruits and delicate bread notes. Perfect for pre-dinner nibbles...
- Malvazija, 2021, Kozlovic, Istria, Croatia -
Winemakers Gianfranco and Antonella Kozlovic are the latest in a family business that began 115 years ago. Their single varietal Malvazija is a crisp, zesty wine, rich in mineral character. Aromatically complex, a fruity nose is underpinned by a light spiciness and the palate is fresh yet opulent with fruit dominating prior to a salty, spicy finish. Beautifully refreshing!
- Chardonnay 'Catalpa', 2019, Bodegas Atamisque, Mendoza, Argentina
The philosophy of the winery is a simple one - "to make great wines, to be successful, but not too big...".
In this particular instance, we are looking at a judiciously-oaked 'single-vineyard' Chardonnay - with 50% fermented in stainless steel - presenting aromas of delicate white, and citrus fruits, lent subtle honey and vanilla notes by the six months French oak ageing. The mouthfeel is a smooth, elegant balance of stone fruits, complemented by sufficient acidity and light minerality. All-in, this is an exceptional example of everything the winery stands for - a great wine that is successful, yet not too big...
- Syrah/Vermentino '1753' Rose, 2019, Chateau Campuget, Costieres de Nimes, France -
Taking its name from the date on which the estate's chateau was built and its first vines planted, Campuget's '1753' Rhone-varietal rose is the ultimate expression of its environment. Vineyards characterised by 'galets' - smooth, rounded, heat-storing pebbles - and grapes of maximum phenolic ripeness, the resulting wines are characteristically aromatic and complex. Temperature-controlled vinification preserves the wine's freshness and aromatic purity and the 'saignee' (bleeding-off) method gives rise to a wine of delicate rose colour, all beautifully packaged with a glass stopper closure. By eye, it is a classic rose petal orange with enticing aromas of grapefruit and fresh citrus fruits. The palate is dry and refreshing with red berry fruits to the fore and a lifted finish. Undoubtedly Provençal.
- Garnacha 'Cadalso', 2018, Montana, Spain
Sierra de Gredos is located within the Sistema Central Mountain range which forms the backbone of the Iberian peninsula. It boasts a rich and diverse heritage of grape growing and a number of unusual grapes which cannot be found elsewhere in Spain. The decomposed soils, coupled with the wide diurnal temperatures experienced at the high altitude sites - 700-1100 MASL - give rise to fine, elegant, age-worthy wines. Small, terraced, northerly-oriented parcels were hand-harvested and de-stemmed prior to fermentation in concrete tanks with natural yeasts selected for maximum expression. Five months ageing took place in concrete tanks without the influence of oak to preserve the purity of the fruit. The resulting wine is a light, delicate and perfumed expression of Garnacha with crunchy blueberries enhanced by subtle floral hints. The wine is fresh, with firm tannins surrounding a core of lively fruit, giving way to a persistent and sustained finish. Drinks beautifully with cold cuts and is an absolute delight chilled for one hour prior to opening.
- Chateau Saint Benazit, 2015, Madiran, (South-West) France
Like neighbouring Cahors, Madiran is one of the most prestigious appellations in the south-west and has become renowned for its full-bodied reds made from the Tannat grape. A local grape of thick skin, the resulting wines boast great aromatic and tannic structure. Chateau Saint Benazit is a small, family-run vineyard culminating from the amalgamation of three wine cooperatives in 1979. It makes approachable wines, favoured for their spicy backbone and rich black fruit aromas. Subtle toasty notes add complexity to a rich, smooth and elegant finish. A great value wine, pairing perfectly with char-grill.
